A little way up the West Coast from Cape Town lies a hidden gem: Churchhaven. It boasts a handful of beach cottages, a tidal lagoon with warm turquoise water, pastel painted wooden fishing boats, flamingoes, fish, birds and a way of life that feels ancient.
When planning a winter escape, we wanted a house close to nature, a big fireplace, an ocean nearby, and fun people.
Churchhaven is the perfect spot to take a long walk next to the tranquil waters of a beautiful lagoon. Ideal for reflecting, watching the sun go down and creating beautiful memories and experiences. Alive with birds, flamingos and small animals, there’s more than enough nature to keep you curious for the day. Across the way from the lagoon is a wild coastline with seals and dolphins, waves and big boulders. There are hiking routes all around, and the houses are inside a national park. Not far away is a scenic lighthouse.
Besides slowing down, we’ll make sure we have a great time. With kayaks and a small sailing boat, we can play pirate games and explore the distant shores of the lagoon. We’ll equip our kayaks with LED’s and have a midnight light festival in the middle of the lake – if the weather allows!
Our accommodation shares the lagoon with one of South Africa’s premier kiteboarding spots: Shark Bay. We will arrange group and individual lessons for those who want to join (just let us know in advance), and if the weather permits, an epic downwinder across the length of the lagoon! For those more experienced, it’s possible to kite from the beach next to the villa and have the entire space to yourself.
There’s also a chance to surf at Yzerfontein, a nearby village (with one of the best bakeries we’ve ever seen!!).
We will have a villa there to ourselves with an open fire, outdoor showers, and a short walk to the water’s edge. The villa is completely off-grid, completely reliant on solar and unaffected by loadshedding.
Theres a fully equipped kitchen, a lovely interior, and all the basics. We’ll share cooking duties and have all the necessary comforts including wifi.
It is the perfect place to unwind, eat good food and soak up the sun!
