BUMBUNTU'S MISSION IS TO CONNECT PEOPLE IN CAPE TOWN IN AN EASY AND LOW KEY WAY

Good to see you here!

Hello everyone! I would love to introduce myself. I’m Emmelie Steentjes, founder of Bumbuntu and Cape Town addict since 2015.

Bumbuntu is born from my own needs. Every time I come back to Cape Town I feel happy and excited, but it has always been a bit of a challenge to connect with new people if you are here only for a couple of months a year. Cape Town is a digital nomad paradise, which means that people come and go, and I was missing a community that I can feel part of.

I love to explore new hiking trails, go to bars and restaurants I’ve never been to, and find other hidden gems around town, but many times days are moving fast and before I know it I didn’t explore as many new cool things as I wanted.

This is why I started Bumbuntu.

Bumbuntu brings together everything Cape Town has to offer on one platform. And it offers a great way to connect with other people who want to get the best out of Cape Town life, just like you.

Cape Town is where I discovered outdoor lifestyle, being right next to the most stunning beaches of the world, kitesurfing, mountains, exploring desert life, breathtakingly beautiful sunsets, fine dining, Afrika Burn and so many more things I wouldn’t want to miss in life. And not to forget, the friendliness of the local people. Every day people in Cape Town make me smile and just make me feel so welcome. Cape Town has a special place in my heart and that’s what I want to share with you!

Bumbuntu, what does it actually mean?

It’s a combination of the words Bumbanani and Ubuntu.
Bumbanani means “Togetherness” in the local Xhosa language.

Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning ‘humanity to others’. It’s about community and social harmony. Archbishop Desmond Tutu gave a beautiful explanation of the concept, he wrote: “The African view is that a person is a person through other persons”.

This is exactly what we stand for. We are building a community for people to expand their social circle and to unite the diverse communities residing in Cape Town. International Bumbuntu members, local hosts who organise activities and events, as well as the underprivileged, whom we will support through donations and the initiation of various projects.
